Fashion & Style: The Relevance and The Difference

“The Devil Wears Prada” is a timeless film that holds ideas and values that stay true today within the fashion industry. It exemplifies that different opinions for every kind of person and the way they choose to express themselves is through their clothes. The fashion industry and the way in which it operates remains an enigma to so many.

In the film “The Devil Wears Prada” Miranda, portrayed by Meryl Streep, discusses the idea that even if one is not considered to be fashionable or have any sense of personal style, the fashion industry has affected you inevitably. This idea comes from the scene where one out of two similar belts needs to be selected in the effort to complete an outfit. Andy, played by Anne Hathaway, laughs because another assistant says it’s a hard choice because the two belts are so different. The two belts were quite similar with good reason, it gives the audience the chance to be in Andy’s shoes (before they were Chanel boots) and relate to her point of view. By putting the viewer into the same thought process as Andy, what Miranda says makes it all the more critical. In summation, Miranda says that no matter who you are or how you dress, your clothes were designed and selected by a large group of individuals and a meticulous system.

Colors, styles, fabrics, cuts, prints, detailing…these all can be traced from the highest of elite designers over time all the way down to your local goodwill. This is fashion. Fashion is temporary, posing the question “What is hot right now? What is considered a desirable look? Does this reflect who I am as a person?” It decides what makes a particular piece “out of date” and 3 dollars at the thrift store. “It” being fashion, in combination with the passing of time and the constant churning out of new collections and ideas season by season makes fashion what it is.

Fashion is endlessly beautiful, creating something physical that can become part of the way the exterior of a person is perceived, and it says something about yourself without having to speak a word. It is art in fluid motion, and like water fashion is circulated. Something you could find in Vogue from the 1970’s made by YSL for example (I love 70’s fashion, as well as Yves Saint Laurent) could be completely re imagined, modernized, and set free into the world in the present day to show an appreciation for the particular decade and the history that is glued to the time frame, and I chose the 70’s because street fashion and high fashion were both incredible and rich with tales of music, protests, peace and the Vietnam war.

This idea can be tied very closely as well with photographs. When a person looks at an old picture, besides the condition and film and color of the photo, there is a remarkable chance that someone could pick out the time frame just by looking at the clothes, the accessories, the hair, and makeup (if there is any). Fashion is history, and history tends to repeat itself in the best way possible. It’s yet another visual aid of history and culture. Fashion can show you functionality for the time period. It represents revolution on a monumental scale. The roaring 1920’s were wildly important for women. They wanted to be taken more seriously as men were, they wanted freedom and fun and expression, not be covered down in dresses to their ankles, as women in history tended to be. This desire for equality sparked the short male-like haircuts and shorter “flapper” dresses. I can only imagine the liberation of changing ones look so dramatically, as well as finally being able to vote on August 18th of 1920.

Style is the older sister to Fashion. Style is eternal, it’s never ending, and it can take the smallest part of yourself that never changes throughout your lifetime, and display that through your outfit. Fashion decides who you want to be today, this month, or this year. Style shows what you want to be forever. Karl Lagerfeld once said, “one is never overdressed or under dressed in a little black dress” and I genuinely believe that this will hold true till long after my generation has died of old age.

There is one thing that is both an insult and a compliment at the same time, and that’s being called the term “materialistic”. This word is defined as “excessively concerned with material possessions; money-oriented.” This term is thrown around frivolously and constantly without much regard for what it really means for someone who is involved and loves fashion and style for what it is and what it continues to be. Materialism can extend further than just the value of quality, and when it gets to a place of jealousy or greed then it’s a problem. Although the value of quality and beauty and what it costs is not a problem. If paying several hundred dollars for something that is truly loved and is made with the best quality materials that will last a lifetime if cared for properly, and will become part of a personal style for any duration of that lifetime, I see no problem whatsoever in making that investment.  A purse, a pair of shoes, jewelry, or a coat…either the item has a specific function or it’s to change what an outfit could mean or be adorned for whatever event, job, season, celebration, or place one will encounter in their world.

Style is what you make of Fashion. It’s what you do with your pieces, the whole entirety that you create that isn’t ever out of date. If an expensive item is something that you are going to use for a long time, you will get your money’s worth from the comfort and the quality and longevity of that item. Luxury can make a less expensive item hold its own in your life. It can equal confidence and something special in your closet that deserves its spot on the shelf. Think about your favorite article of clothing. What does it mean to you? Is it the way it makes you feel or look? Is it the comfort? Does it remind you of a time or a place? Does it make you feel better on a bad day? Clothing, accessories, beauty products, shoes and everything in between are something that everyone takes part in.

Fashion and Style is more than magazine covers and price tags and models and articles. It’s a connection for humanity and culture. It’s brings many different kinds of people together, it liberates and locks in place in society and it inspires ideas and design and careers. After all, if you’re wearing clothes, then you've already been affected.

Top 10 Countdown: My Frequently Used Makeup Products

Lets begin by saying that I am always late. For everything. School, work, dates, parties, hangouts, if I can be late for it, count on me being late. The reason why I'm always late is because I'm usually doing my makeup. I love doing my makeup to go somewhere and I also like to take my time perfecting my face. I am a total cake-face, I love makeup and this is absolutely a new found love.

I didn't start wearing the "good" expensive makeup till around last October when I wandered into Ulta looking for a good foundation from the drug store makeup side of the store. While I was wandering around an older blonde who looked like Betsy Johnson (In a good way) showed me purminerals. She did my face and I couldn't believe it was me that I was looking at in the mirror. I loved my skin and my makeup application. Id rather not say how much money I dropped on that powder foundation, primer, blush, and bronzer. Lets just say it went into the triple digits.

And now, 6 months later, I am spending money at Sephora and watching makeup tutorials like its no ones business. I research different kinds of techniques and makeups I haven't tried yet.  I have bought brushes and lipsticks and mascaras and bronzers like its my job. I love wearing, buying, doing, playing and discovering makeup. Its honestly the most fun thing I have done alone in my young adult years so far. I look back and wish I could give myself the skill and understanding I have now to my high school self. I was still wearing cheap foundation and too much powder. But now I'm wiser and able to narrow down my top ten favorite makeup products that you need to try for yourself to believe!

1.) MAC Prep and Prime Primer

Primer is honestly one of the most important parts of your makeup application. It makes your skin soft, smooth, and ready to be manipulated with foundation and powders. I love this primer because it keeps my skin from getting too oily and makes my skin super soft for before I put on my foundation. One pump from this cylindrical container covers my whole face with just enough primer. After applying to a clean face, I let it sit for a few minutes before I put on foundation so I know its dried and set. I apply this primer with my (clean and washed!) hands.

Can be found at MAC in stores and online for $30.00+tax. Lasts a long time.

2.) Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation

I could go on and on and on about this foundation. It covers blemishes and skin discolorations, wears for 12 hours, it blends into skin seamlessly, its lightweight, build-able, and doesn't feel like you're wearing a mask. Plus, you only need a small amount applied in circular motions in order to cover your entire face evenly and enough for an everyday look. I am not the queen of perfectly acne free skin, but this foundation hasn't aggravated my acne, or made my T-zone more oily than normal. This foundation keeps my skin looking natural, never orange, and really boosts my confidence about the redness prominent in some parts of my face and my occasional blemish situation because it makes them virtually disappear! Plus its cruelty free (not tested on animals) and has SPF! I apply this foundation with Sephora's makeup brush number 56, the pro flawless airbrush foundation brush

The Foundation retails for $38.00+ tax but lasts a REALLY long time because you don't need a lot of it. The Brush costs $32.00+tax and its one of my favorite brushes. The makeup you use will only looks as good at the quality brush you apply it with. Remember, its a beauty investment!

3.) Bareminerals Matte Powder Foundation

I adore this product because I am not normally a huge fan of powder foundations, but on the days when I don't have time to put on a lot of makeup or don't feel like it, sweeping this on my face instantly evens my skin tone and reduces the oil on my skin. This powder is also great layered on top of the Tarte foundation I mentioned previously to really set the look and make it look airbrushed and clean. This product is a mineral powder which is much better for your skin and something I use every day in my makeup process.

This product retails for $28.00+tax and lasts a fair amount of time depending on how much of it you use. You will absolutely make use of it!

4.) MAC "Brave" Lipstick

This lipstick is one of my favorites because its subtle enough for day time looks, but sexy enough for night time as well. Its the perfect shade of mauve and makes your lips feel soft and hydrated, not dry and chapped. I love mac lipsticks because the colors are always vibrant and long lasting. And, in addition to Brave, if you're into the Kylie Jenner look...

5.) MAC "Dervish" Lip Pencil

This lip liner was the closest thing I could find to the color "Soar" because my local MAC location was sold out, but because this liner is a hair darker than brave, it wears amazing in combination with the lipstick when I line my lips. Not only does the lip liner stay as well as the lipstick, it keeps the lipstick from smearing off onto my face and looking tacky. This is a dynamic duo, and I will be purchasing these two products as a pair again and again. I use this lipstick and lip pencil almost every day, its a go-to in my makeup collection.

The lipstick is $15.00+tax and the Lip pencil is $16.00+tax. Not a bad price for a staple!

6.) Vintage Cosmetic Company Kitty False Lashes

I did not start out as a huge fan of fake lashes, but as soon as I bought this pair and tried them, I was hooked! I got these at my work for $3.99, but the company is based in the UK and can be ordered online for about 4 pounds (you do the math and the conversion) but these lashes come with the adhesive AND are reusable. As long as you care for these lashes, they will do you proud. They are high impact and make your whole makeup application look clean, sharp, and frankly, "on fleek". I love these lashes and are wary to stray from this brand because this was my first positive experience with lashes.

7.) Purminerals Savvy Blush

This blush is my one and only besides a drastically more peach colored blush I own that I rarely use, because Savvy is amazing. Its the right color for my fair skin, it doesn't clump on my face, it looks natural and pretty. It honestly gives you the perfect flushed look. It lasts a long time because the pigment isn't too intense but its enough to be noticeable on your skin.

This item retails for $18.00+tax but lasts forever! If you wear blush frequently, you wont regret this shade, it's perfect.

8.) Covergirl LashBlast Mascara

When it comes to mascara, in my opinion there's no reason to buy a really expensive brand. Mascara is mascara is mascara. If you apply it enough, well, and correctly, it'll serve its purpose! I stick to the regular black mascara and not the waterproof because the waterproof is hard to get off even with soap, and I noticed my eyelashes were coming out from all the rough scrubbing. This mascara lasts all day and gets the job done and can be found almost anywhere! I'm sold.

Typically this mascara retails for around $6.99+tax depending on where you shop. For this buy, go ahead and get it from Walmart for the cheapest selling price.

9.) Tarte Park Ave. Princess Bronzer

Tarte is really one my favorite companies because their products are cruelty free and just work! This bronzer is a matte and waterproof, it's perfect for the days when I'm in the mood to contour. Its a true brown, not orange or unnatural looking, and always impresses me when I use it on a warm day where I may sweat a little. When I contour using this bronzer, the Tarte double ended contour brush is amazing, and without a doubt my favorite tool to contour with. Once again, another dynamic duo.

The contour brush (The Slenderizer, as its offically called) is $32.00+tax and the tarte matte bronzer is $30.00+tax. If you want to try contouring, this is an easy place to start that gives you great results!

10.) Maybelline Baby Lips Tinted Lip Balms

I am a big huge fan of baby lips. It makes your lips incredibly soft and healthy looking, curbs the appearance of chapped lips, and delivers a slightly glossy hint of color. I have 4 baby lips in my makeup collection and I use them quite frequently in lieu of lipstick. I honestly couldn't get enough of these things, plus with SPF you're encouraged to have colorful flirty lips at the beach or pool. Life doesn't get much better than that! Plus the packaging is too cute!

These are excellent because they're cheap and easy to find! I have never seen them sold for more than $4.00+tax and can be found almost anywhere

Makeup is so much fun, changing up your look on a day to day basis and being able to wash it right off at the end of the day is so liberating, and shopping and adding new things to your collection can be so exciting. Makeup can honestly do incredible things. My best advice to my lovely gorgeous followers is to practice any and all make up looks you're considering, watch youtube tutorials for techniques, and always be sure to wash your face really well before bed so you don't cause breakouts, as well as wash your brushes with mild soap and lukewarm water and lay them horizontally to dry!

Tinkerbell: Faith, Trust, and College Loan

Recently, I had been in a goodwill store in central Florida. Id happened to be pretty sick and looking for some 2 dollar DVDs to watch while I fought off the terrible cold I had. I ended up with 6 movies whose disks just needed a little cleaning; Nothing I couldn't handle with some DVD cleaning wipes. In that collection of movies I bought, I had Burlesque, 50 First Dates, The Devil Wears Prada, Hairspray, Legally Blonde and Tinkerbell.

The first movie I watched was Tinkerbell, and I made a really interesting observation while watching this modern take on a a tiny Disney character with the most attitude that could fit in someone so small. Tinkerbell is really the story of a freshman in college.

No really, I've sat down for a while and really thought about it, and its completely true. And now that I'm all better from that cold, and ready to put acrylic nails to keys, Ill tell you exactly what I've

found.

All faeries come from earth, when a baby laughs for the first time. Then, after that, they make this crazy long trip to pixie hollow (second star on the right) and then there they are in a whole other world! It sounds like a very abstract concept to make comparisons, but coming from high school, graduating, and sometimes moving many states away to go to college is EXACTLY like the idea Disney shows us at the beginning of Tinkerbell. Its a big scary thing to happen to someone in just a few short months, or even weeks sometimes. Leaving everything you knew, your family and friends, and 2 dozen pair of shoes to share a place in a dorm with someone you may have only talked to by

texting or facebook,  and to a whole new world that you've yet to explore. Its this intoxicating mixture of excitement and total fear for people.

Every faerie has to pick their talent when they arrive from earth to pixie hollow, which if you've never seen the film, you can be either a water, plant, animal, light, or a fast-flying faerie, or a tinker faerie. Tinkerbell doesn't pick her talent so much as the talent picks her. There is a placement of items from each nature talent, and the fairy picks her talent, although in Tinkerbell's case, the tinker talents hammer glows and floats, and there ya go, Tinkerbell is a tinker fairy. Picking a talent is a heck of a lot like picking a major in college, and sometimes youre not really the one who picks what your major is, your major is picked for you by your parents. Picking a major is a tough thing to do because 6 months ago, you had 7 classes and a boatload of homework for each class, a structured schedule for all your classes...some teachers even wanted to try to tell you how many times you

could pee a semester. And now? Freedom. You go to class two days a week, 4 classes, a reasonable amount of studying, homework, papers, you can get a job, you can pee when you want to and you have a plan for your schooling that's based on your major. Like narrows a lot
but oh my word does it expand like you wouldn't believe. Bottom line? Talents are College Majors.

Tinkerbell makes friends pretty quickly, just like in one would in college. People talk to you all the time. You need to be careful where you decide to sit the first day because whoever sits next to you will probably become your best friend in that class. I've made so many awesome friends in college and I'm truly loving it. Community college isn't everything you dream of, but the support you get from other people just trying to go to a real university like you are

makes a huge difference. Tinkerbell's friends are all very different and open as soon as they really start to interact, which is how most of the friends I've made so far have been.

When Tinkerbell decides she doesn't want to be a tinker fairy anymore, she seeks out the help of her friends with different talents to help her find what else she may be good at. This is essentially the struggle of changing your major and not knowing what you want to change your major to. I think anyone in college has either changed their major or seriously considered it because your major is something you'll love one day and hate the next. Tinkerbell gets pretty frustrated and angry and sad throughout the film because she doesn't like her talent but comes to find that her talent is what shes good at and finds that she actually does love it.

Those are the pretty large college similarities, and here some of the smaller comparisons:

The leaders of the different seasons are pretty much deans and department heads.

The faeries with the same talents hang out together, and also practice their talents -in separate areas, which is like having different buildings for different departments and making friends and studying with people who share

your major

The faeries are working on a deadline to bring the next season to the world, and college is all deadlines and due dates.

Tinkerbell was given a home when she came to pixie hollow, most students are given money in financial aid when they go to college for their housing, books.

There's a lot of things Disney puts into their movies so the parents and older kids can really relate to the story and enjoy it. And I really enjoy me some Tinkerbell to make me less sad about college sometimes.

If you ever get a reasonably bad cold and need to lay in bed and recuperate, I highly suggest watching Tinkerbell and seeing the comparisons in action.
